Excel Add-in Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues using the Excel Add-in after installation—such as unresponsive buttons, missing features, or unexpected error messages—use the guidance below to diagnose and resolve the most common problems.

Configure a new Central Point

The first time you use a feature from the Add-ins tab, the SEI login page prompts you to configure a Central Point. This configuration allows the Excel Add-in to communicate with your SEI environment and retrieve data. For detailed setup instructions, see Add a Central Point.

Buttons in the Add-in do not respond

If clicking a button in the Add-ins tab does nothing, the Add-in may not have the required permissions or may be blocked by Windows security settings. Try the following:

  1. Run Excel as an administrator.
This ensures the Add-in can load all required components without restrictions.
  2. Verify your Windows user permissions.
Your account must have access rights to use all Excel Add-in features, including reading and writing configuration files.
  3. Check Windows security or IT policies.
If the issue continues, your workstation’s security settings—such as antivirus, controlled folder access, or group policies—may be blocking the Add-in. Review these settings or contact your IT administrator for assistance.

Compilation error in the Add-in

If you encounter a compilation error while using the Formula Wizard, Data Extraction, Pivot Tables, or any other Excel Add-in (Complément) feature, the issue may be related to recent Office updates that disable ActiveX components. Refer to the troubleshooting guide Compilation error when using Excel Add-in after Office 365 update disables ActiveX for detailed steps on how to resolve this problem.

In Excel 2016 or later, your display settings can also affect how the Add-in behaves. When Optimize for best appearance is enabled, certain dialog windows may fail to render correctly or may not appear at all. To fix this, change your Excel display setting to Optimize for compatibility, which ensures proper display of all Add-in dialogs and controls.
